If you thought about your wedding dress much as a young child, chances are, you pictured a ball gown. Most fairy tales and movies portray princesses in sparkling, full-skirt ensembles with layers of tulle, leading many young girls to believe that this is the only style out there for them. As time goes on, many women hold onto this design as a life-long fantasy from childhood, while others go on to explore other options. When it finally comes time for a bride-to-be to shop around for a gown of her own, it’s quite exciting to be able to sample the chic silhouettes available at salons worldwide. From here, some women discover a penchant for a more form-fitting concept – one of which being the trumpet gown.

Quite a few people assume that every dress that hugs the body and then flares out below the hips is considered a mermaid style, but there are distinct differences between the two. As the shape of the instrument namesake suggests, a trumpet gown fits snugly on the body until approximately the mid-thigh region, and then begins to flare into an open skirt. It is perhaps a more practical choice for brides who desire the drama and shape of the mermaid silhouette, but also want to be able to move without as much restriction during their reception.
