Who doesn’t dream about an international getaway with their sweetheart? The rise in the popularity of destination weddings and honeymoons clearly illustrates that couples in love have been bitten by the travel bug. With all of the logistics involved with planning your nuptials, it’s downright blissful to see a fantastic vacation at the end of the tunnel – but the question is: where will you go?

One of the most popular continents for weddings and honeymoons is Europe: with a rich history, delectable food, and gorgeous scenery (both natural and architectural) it is truly a dream destination. Though many feel inclined to book a ticket there already, the film industry has certainly had an affect on the allure of European countries. Certain romantic comedies, musicals, and historical works of fiction have painted various areas of Europe in such a beautiful – albeit playful – light.

Here are five of our favorite movies that depict European countries for destination wedding inspiration!

France - Midnight in Paris (2011)

Though Paris is already considered to be one of the most romantic cities in the world, the film makes couples want to wander around well past their bedtimes in search of something magical. The movie boasts many gorgeous shots of the famed French capital while following the misadventures of the film’s protagonist, a Hollywood screenwriter named Gil (Owen Wilson), and the many historical figures he meets after he is somehow transported through time to the 1920s. Engaged pairs are bound to feel an intense wanderlust for the "City of Lights" – and why not celebrate your love in a place most famous for romance?

England - About Time (2013)

With this sweet film, couples can get inspiration for their London travels as well as any trips to the English countryside – more specifically, Cornwall. Another movie that centers around some form of time travel, the plot involves Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) learning a secret: the men in his family have the ability to move through time. He uses this newfound power to win the heart of Mary (Rachel McAdams), but of course, the problems of everyday life find the two of them. Both the rolling hills of the country and the bustling streets of London entrance brides and grooms. What a historic and stunning backdrop for a wedding!

Greece - Mamma Mia (2008)

When the lively songs by ABBA meet the breathtaking landscape of a small Greek island, how can you resist? This fun adaptation of the classic Broadway musical sweeps across pristine beaches and seaside mountain ranges as Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) prepares for her wedding by inviting three men who could possibly be her father – unbeknownst to her former-rock-star mother Donna (Meryl Streep). If duos are looking for the wonder of Europe mixed with the warmth of a more tropical location, this film clearly shows that Greece is an idyllic option for a destination vow exchange.

Scotland - Made of Honor (2008)

As one of the often lesser-considered European destinations, Scotland doesn’t even need a whole lot of screen time to entice couples. In the film, Tom (Patrick Dempsey) is in love with his best friend Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) who, incidentally, becomes engaged to a Scotsman. Hannah makes Tom her man of honor, which allows him to attempt to break up the marriage from the inside. Though the movie takes part mostly in New York City, there are a fair amount of scenes displaying gorgeous views of Scotland – and in a wedding context, no less! What could be more perfect?

Italy - When in Rome (2010)

Yet another movie wherein the protagonist only visits the Italian city of Rome relatively briefly – but with the shots of the historic church, the beautiful fountains, and the whimsical atmosphere, a glimpse is all engaged pairs need to convince them to travel to the destination. Beth (Kristen Bell) jets off to Rome for her sister’s wedding, and while there, steals some coins from a fountain, causing various men to fall in love with her, including the attractive best man, Nick (Josh Duhamel), and she must determine is his affections are real. As the protagonist needs to believe in love once more, Rome is an ideal setting. Additionally, who doesn’t love seeing two real-life sweethearts – Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard – star in a movie together?
