how to stop focusing on getting engaged

Whether you’ve shopped for rings together, heard he asked for your parents’ blessing, or accidentally happened upon the ring hidden somewhere in your home, knowing your partner is going to propose is an amazing feeling. You’ve probably discussed it for a while now, but having things feel less hypothetical makes it all the more real.

With the idea of a proposal on the horizon, it’s understandable that you may start to feel antsy about getting engaged. You know the ball is rolling, so what’s taking so long? However, it’s important to remain calm and not focus on an impending engagement too much. For one, you’ll drive yourself crazy and ruin what little surprise is left. Not to mention that if you continue to bring it up to your sweetheart, they may find it off-putting or worry about making sure it’s perfect, and then suddenly you’ve delayed the proposal!

Instead of thinking about the fact that there hasn’t been a proposal yet, focus on knowing that it’s going to happen. That’s exciting! Soon, even if it’s not as soon as you would like, you’ll be starting a new chapter of your lives together.

We understand that’s easier said than done though, so we have put together a list of tips to help you distract yourself while waiting for the big question – and that ring.

- Avoid snooping, as finding out information like timelines or budgets can make waiting even harder.
- Focusing on a new exercise routine can clear your head and get out any frustration you may be feeling about your situation.
- Learn a new hobby like knitting or baking to give yourself a project.
- Take an extension class at the local college, whether it’s something for fun or something that could help your career.
- If your living situation allows for it, consider fostering a pet.
- When you can't get the thoughts out of your head, write out your feelings in a diary or a private word document.
- Plan dates and fun outings so you can enjoy your relationship at its current stage. As much as you want to be wedding planning, there are several aspects that are more stressful than fun.
- It's okay to pin to your wedding board every now and then if something catches your eye, but try not to preplan too much. You’ll probably change almost everything anyway.
