“So when’s the date?” That’s the question most couples hear when they announce their engagement – even when the proposal was only hours before. Though most newly affianced will not actually have an answer to that question, it can add pressure to pick a date right away. However, you shouldn’t let that rush you, as there are a lot of factors that go into picking the perfect date to get married.

Unless there is a sentimentally significant date that you and your sweetheart have imagined tying the knot on even before you became engaged, the date should not come before the venue. Being open to a variety of wedding dates will give you more options for locations to host your ceremony and reception. This is especially true if you plan to have each event in a separate space – particularly a ceremony in a house of worship followed by a party elsewhere – because then you need each venue to have your date available. If you hire a wedding planner, you may want to work around their schedule as well. Some people don’t hire a consultant until after picking the venue, but others prefer the assistance of a professional in finding the perfect place to celebrate their love.
Of course, it’s important to at least have a window of time that you’d want to get married before initiating any planning, which is why many couples first pick a season to host their wedding. Once you’ve decided on spring, summer, fall, or winter, it’s a good idea to contact the most important people in your life to discover any scheduling conflicts. While it’s not realistic to check with your entire guest list before landing on an official date, there are always a few loved ones (parents, siblings, best friends) that you can’t imagine the big day without. Though something like an office Christmas party shouldn’t affect your choice, an event like your sister’s college graduation is something you’ll want to stay away from.
