Step away from Cake Boss and Amazing Wedding Cakes. Your wedding cake doesn't need to feature your dog made out of fondant or a top tier that shoots sparklers in order to impress your guests. Simpler designs, with just the right amount of fresh flowers or delicate piping, make a gorgeous statement on your dessert table (and often taste even better than more elaborate cakes!).
Keep the fondant or buttercream base white, and then add touches of flowers and edible decorations in your wedding colors. A few clusters of fresh blooms like peonies or roses look lovely placed on the top and sides of the cake. Use fondant to create geometric shapes in bold colors. Top layers with fresh fruit, or wrap them with soft ribbon. And with a smaller size and fewer layers, your baker can focus on making sure the confection tastes as delicious on the inside as it looks on the outside.
