It's time to play the waiting game...
It’s engagement season! As many people out there are currently planning how to propose to their beloved, there are even more patiently (or perhaps not-so patiently) waiting for a ring. In these modern times, most couples discuss these next steps together, rather than risk popping the question on an unsuspecting sweetheart who doesn’t have an answer prepared. Many lovebirds even choose to go ring shopping together. In these cases, there is often a waiting period between a joint decision that you will get married someday and an actual, official proposal. This can be stressful for the person planning the right moment, but it can be even tougher for the one doing the waiting.

If you know a proposal could be coming any day now, here is how to handle the anticipation:
- Don’t tell anyone. Your closest friends and family members might actually be in on the plan, but if they aren’t, you don’t want to deal with someone constantly asking if the proposal finally happened.
- Live in the moment. Whenever a vacation or date night happens, it’s likely your expectations will be raised. It’s easier said than done, but try to put the idea of getting engaged out of your mind. For example, you don’t want to ruin a trip by getting your hopes up and then being disappointed after every scenic view that doesn’t lead to a proposal. Instead, enjoy your experiences together for what they are.
- Don’t start planning. When you know an engagement is coming soon, it can be tempting to start making calls and figuring out the logistics related to an upcoming wedding. However, it’s best not to do this because not only does it add more pressure to your significant other, but it can also lead to disappointment if the timing doesn’t end up working how you planned. That said, there is nothing wrong with daydreaming via your Pinterest board!
- Try to be available. Many of our brides featured in our real weddings section have mentioned how they almost ruined the moment by canceling on plans that were secretly leading to a proposal. Obviously, there are some circumstances where you can’t free up your schedule, but say yes to unexpected date nights and go with the flow when you can.
