For newlyweds in search of a honeymoon destination that offers culture as well as romance, look no further than Italy. With incredible architecture, some of the most famous artwork in the world, breathtaking landscapes, and historical ruins everywhere you turn, Italy is truly a wonder to behold.

You could spend years traveling around Italy and still not see all the sites and attractions the country has to offer, even with their fantastic system of high-speed trains. Best to figure out what cities or regions hold the most appeal to you both and focus within that area.

Italy’s most famous cities--Venice, Florence, Rome, and Milan--are unforgettable, each with its’ own character, architecture, and attractions. But don’t forget about smaller cities like Padua, Verona, Pisa, and Siena, which are just as fascinating and tend to be a bit less crowded.

If you’re searching for more of a natural setting, Tuscany countrysides hold incredible appeal while the romantic Amalfi Coast offers stunning ocean views, steep cliffs, and colorful hillside towns. From there, take a day trip to see the ancient city of Pompeii or head south by ferry or train to Sicily. Northern Italy also provides its own share of highlights such as Cinque Terre, five villages connected by miles of trails along the Italian Riviera coastline, perfect if you and your hubby-to-be love to hike together.

If you’re considering Italy for a honeymoon there are a few things to keep in mind. There’s so much to see and do while you’re there you might feel guilty taking a day off to relax, but make sure you schedule some down time or else it’s easy to wear out. Also, because Italy is a bit of a tourist trap, be prepared to pay lots of extra fees when visiting famous sites. Keep vigilant for pickpockets, especially on the Circumvesuviana train to the Amalfi coast. (EDITOR'S NOTE: Someone tried to lift my fiancé’s camera, which contained photos of our recent engagement, right off of his belt as we were stepping on this train. Fortunately, it was fastened on securely).

Having said all that, there’s no doubt: with its history, its art, its scenery, and its amazing food and wine, a honeymoon in Italy offers something for every newlywed couple and would definitely be an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
