When Dr. Vick Sahakian casually walked into his examination room one random afternoon, he had no idea the new patient he was about to see was going to change his life. “He did a double-take and was goofy and sensitive all in the same five minutes,” remembers Sabrina Hanson of the handsome physician whom she would soon begin to date. “I was smitten.” Vick’s eventual proposal was also a balance of silly and sweet: He arranged for a large package containing a huge surprise to be delivered to Sabrina. “His children, Maia and Naar, popped out of the box and asked me if I would marry their dad!” Sabrina reveals. “How could I say no?” she jokes. Vick then got on bended knee and formally asked his beloved for her hand in marriage.
For their spring wedding, the bride concentrated on hiring experienced professionals that came highly recommended, and followed much of the advice of her mother and wedding consultant. Old Hollywood glamour became the underlying theme of the affair, inspiring décor infused with glittering details, lace embellishments, and a romantic color scheme of pale pink, ebony, and cream. Oversized Baroque-style black mirrors, tufted furniture for the cocktail hour and reception, and a lot of bling added to the ambiance that the bride wanted to focus on for the event. “It was definitely the sparkle factor that won me over,” she confirms of her chosen motif.
Sabrina quickly settled on a beautiful Southern California venue for the celebration because of its magnificent architecture, charming beauty, and impeccable service. “My huge family resides in San Diego, so choosing The Grand Del Mar was a no-brainer,” says the bride. “Plus, [the hotel] is gorgeous and very romantic.” Rose petals were strewn along a custom-made aisle runner that boasted the couple’s monogram, and ends of aisleways showcased alternating adornments of pretty florals and pillar candles. Two standing bouquets of hydrangeas, roses, and peonies placed behind a wooden base topped with rows of additional flowers created a lovely backdrop for the candlelit vow exchange.
Bridesmaids carried nosegays of Malmaison roses and wore sophisticated short dresses of champagne pink satin overlaid with black lace. The bride looked beautiful in a fitted halter dress with a bodice of hand-beaded crystals and a skirt that cascaded to the floor in fluffy tiers. Sparkling fingerless gloves shone against her full bouquet of peonies and roses, and a delicate headpiece featured a teardrop crystal centered neatly on her forehead. Trumpets announced Sabrina’s walk down the aisle. “I love a grand entrance,” she admits.
Vick read his promises to Sabrina while an Armenian prayer played in the background. The nervous bride laughed and replied with a firm “Ditto!” before speaking extemporaneously. “I didn’t write vows and chose to simply share words from the heart,” she shares. Though the pair is typically very playful with one another, their sincere expressions were heartfelt and displayed the true connection and love they share.
The ballroom of the luxurious resort was laden with striking décor details, such as crystal-encrusted overlays of lace that draped champagne satin table linens, and delicate sleeves of ebony chiffon that festooned deep black chairs. The elements of the tablescapes were just as stunning and featured centerpieces made of softly colored peonies, orchids, hydrangeas, and anemones accented with plumage in bold black. Each guest’s setting included a silky pink napkin fastened with a shimmery blossom and topped with a customized menu card. Rosy lighting bounced off the walls of the space, and a handmade chandelier of crystals and strings of orchids hung overhead. Fragrant Black Orchid candles in decorative custom boxes were offered to guests as favors.
The evening was filled with humor and love, and Sabrina and Vick couldn’t have been happier with the end-result of their big day – literally. “My fondest memory was the first 45 minutes in the honeymoon suite after the reception!” teases Vick. The comical groom also claims there was only one thing he would have done differently on his wedding day: “Go for a younger wife!”
“My husband has a hard time being serious,” Sabrina laughs. “But that’s why I love him.”
