Emily Huddleston and Jonathan Campbell’s story is one shaped by timing, distance, and serendipity. Though Emily grew up in Virginia – with deep roots in Texas – and Jonathan in North Carolina, their lives orbited similar places for years without ever quite intersecting.
“Our families both spent summers on Smith Mountain Lake… a detail we didn’t discover until much later,” Emily shares. It wasn’t until they returned to Virginia during the pause of Covid, each pursuing an MBA after careers that had taken them across the country, that their paths finally aligned. Today, they call New York home, “grateful for every twist that brought us there.”
Jonathan’s proposal unfolded in Tofino, a remote surf town on Canada’s western coast, where an unexpected shift in plans made the moment even more meaningful. “His original plan was to surprise me on a hike, but the weather was non cooperative,” Emily explains. Instead, he pivoted to a quiet dock, and along the way, they encountered something unforgettable. “We saw a pod of orcas, which ended up being even more magical and special than the original plan!”
Following a year of wedding planning alongside their planner Hannah, the couple exchanged vows in Santa Fe, New Mexico, surrounded by 180 guests who traveled from across the country to witness the nuptials. “For our wedding, we chose Santa Fe, a place that felt both grounding and magical,” Emily shares. The couple designed a celebration that fully embraced the spirit of the destination. “We really wanted our guests to feel the sense of place that drew us there to begin with,” she adds.
From the outset, Emily approached planning with a deep appreciation for hospitality, shaped by her background in luxury events. “I really wanted my guests to experience the very best of hospitality on our wedding weekend,” she says, noting that service played a defining role in every decision. That ethos extended beyond the wedding day itself, as the couple curated a full weekend of thoughtfully designed events for their guests.
A Ralph Lauren-inspired barn rehearsal dinner featured a buffet, s’mores, and live music by fiddler Philip Bowen, while the welcome party embraced a playful “Rhinestone Cowboy” theme, complete with a mechanical bull. Each gathering offered its own distinct aesthetic, culminating in a wedding day that reflected Santa Fe’s “beautiful and enchanting” allure.
Set against the enchanting backdrop of the Southwest, the ceremony itself was deeply personal, highlighted by vows the couple wrote for one another. “Jonathan’s were really beautiful. Not a dry eye in the crowd,” Emily confirms. Despite the scale of the celebration, that moment stood still in time. “Weddings are so chaotic and there are so many people to say hello to, but when it was him reading his vows, it felt like it was just the two of us.”
“We really wanted our guests to feel the sense of place that drew us [to Santa Fe] to begin with.”
The design vision drew inspiration from the region’s artistic legacy and natural beauty. “Santa Fe is known as the Land of Enchantment,” Emily says, and the couple leaned into that at every turn. Invitations incorporated artwork inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe and Gustave Baumann, while florals highlighted local, seasonal blooms. “We loved our florists who leaned into local flowers, fall foliage, and a slightly spooky, Stevie Nicks-inspired vibe,” the bride adds, resulting in arrangements that felt organic and evocative.
The culinary experience also paid homage to the setting, blending elevated cuisine with regional flavor. During cocktail hour, guests enjoyed inventive passed bites such as bacon-wrapped New Mexican quail, lamb lollipops with mole rojo, yellowfin tuna tartare, and sweet potato taquitos, along with a chile roasting station. Dinner highlighted a fall salad followed by a choice of salmon, buffalo tenderloin, or vegetarian pasta – a thoughtful inclusion reflecting Emily’s own preferences. Dessert concluded the evening with cowboy bread pudding and, of course, wedding cake.
Family too played an integral role throughout the planning process, particularly Emily’s mother. “It was a true mother-daughter adventure,” shares the bride. “My mom and I handled every detail together, and it became such a meaningful part of the experience.” Her mother’s guidance also proved invaluable in decision-making, helping Emily stay focused amid an abundance of creative ideas. “Once you land on a direction, don’t go back,” she shares as the best advice she received.
Throughout the weekend, the couple remained mindful of the experience they were creating for their loved ones. “We really appreciated our guests traveling for our special weekend, so we wanted each event to be special and exciting,” Emily explains. From locally sourced welcome gifts to immersive event design at every turn, every detail was considered with intention.
Looking back, Emily’s perspective is both grounded and reassuring. “I’ve literally never been to one I haven’t loved,” she says of the many weddings she’s attended. “The people who love you want to be there for you on your special day, and no matter what, everyone is rooting for you.” It’s a sentiment that defined their celebration in Santa Fe for a wedding weekend shaped not only by beauty, design, and the setting, but by the shared joy of everyone who gathered to witness it.
