Before their Los Angeles wedding that blended the feeling of European countryside romance with the warmth of a Nancy Meyers film, Morgan Gruber and Zackary Shaevitz’s love story began in New York, where they matched on Hinge but truly connected at the Brooklyn Mirage. “Though we met on a dating app, we often say we truly fell in love on the dance floor… I believe the universe brought us together at the perfect time, allowing us to explore the vibrant, underground pulse of New York together.”
Discovering a shared love of music, their first kiss on Hudson Street sealed the moment – later inspiring the name of their dog, Hudson. Before long, Zack proposed at his future in-laws’ beach club in the Hamptons, where he surprised his soon-to-be bride with both families and her best friend by their side.
As an interior designer and principal of Morgan Gruber Design, the bride approached wedding planning through a deeply visual lens. Her best advice came early: “understand how you communicate and build a team that speaks the same language.”
Choosing a wedding planner who also has a background in interior design, Morgan found a creative partner who instinctively understood her vision and also worked closely with her mother, who served as both a sounding board and collaborator to curate the couple’s dream wedding day.
Eschewing traditional bridal parties, Morgan’s sister served as her maid of honor, while Zack’s brother stood as best man, allowing the focus to remain on the experience rather than formalities. The alfresco ceremony honored their Jewish heritage with deeply meaningful traditions. Under the verdant chuppah, the couple was wrapped by their parents in a tallit belonging to Zack’s grandfather and drank wine from Morgan’s nana’s kiddush cup.
Music set the tone from the very beginning: Zack and his family walked down the aisle to “Magic” by Polo & Pan, while Morgan entered to Brent Morgan’s rendition of “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid. Before Zack broke the glass, the ceremony closed with a perfectly timed cue: “Trebles Finals: Bright Lights Bigger City/Magic” from Pitch Perfect, beginning just as Ben Platt sings, “I’ve got the magic in me.”
“If the music was perfect, the tone would be perfect.”
For the reception, guests arrived to a warm space grounded in earth tones, led by sage and olive greens layered with texture. Velvet drapery, bespoke shapes, and patinated flatware added depth and softness, while every element was selected to feel collected, rather than styled. Greenery took center stage in the florals, with arrangements designed to appear as though they were growing directly from the tables.
Waves of brighter and muted green tones were punctuated with subtle touches of white and aubergine, while cascading amaranthus trailed organically along the tablescapes, mirroring Morgan’s dramatic bouquet of solely green amaranthus. “I cried when it was handed to me,” she shares of “the most beautiful and unique bouquet I’ve ever seen.”
Dinner was served seated, with a menu designed to feel indulgent, yet unfussy. Late into the night, the celebration shifted gears. For the after-party, In-N-Out burgers were hand-passed on the dance floor as a late-night snack, alongside espresso martini shots and strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla milkshakes to ensure no one had to leave the music, which remained the defining thread throughout the nuptials. “If the music was perfect, the tone would be perfect,” Morgan shares of their direction for the event.
Since their love story began on the dance floor, it came full circle the night of their nuptials, when they danced with each other and loved ones as a DJ played their favorite music and guests were transported into that vibrant, underground NYC scene where they first fell in love.
