There’s an undeniable magic in weddings that blend deep cultural meaning with modern romance, and Xia Sun and Jonathan Chan’s celebration at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu did just that. The couple envisioned a day that honored their Chinese heritage while embracing the beauty of the natural surroundings. “We wanted guests to feel as though they were stepping into an enchanted garden,” Xia shares.

Their wedding day began with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony – a cherished Chinese wedding custom symbolizing respect, gratitude, and the joining of two families. Set on a sunlit lawn surrounded by lush greenery, the ceremony featured antique carved wooden doors draped in fresh florals and intricately designed traditional Chinese chairs. Wearing beautifully crafted traditional Chinese attire, Xia and Jonathan exchanged tea with their parents in a timeless moment.

As the sun dipped behind the hills of Malibu, guests were welcomed to the main ceremony site, a romantic garden setting adorned with cascading greenery, soft drapery, and elegant chandeliers suspended overhead. Guests were seated atop clear Chiavari chairs creating a clean, airy aesthetic to complement the surrounding nature. Jonathan’s godmother officiated the heartfelt exchange of vows, which the couple recalls as their most memorable moment of the day.

“We wanted guests to feel as though they were stepping into an enchanted garden.”

When it came to design, the pair trusted The Yes Story to bring the vision to life. The reception space featured a showstopping floral waterfall installation behind the sweetheart table, with suspended greenery and soft drapery overhead adding to the dreamlike atmosphere. Centerpieces were kept low to encourage conversation, while a live band filled the night with energy and joy throughout the night.

Dinner was served in a refined three-course menu, and the beautiful wedding cake was inspired by the venue’s iconic cascading waterfall and decorated with Xia’s favorite flower – the peony – for a romantic finishing touch. Later, a late-night snack station featuring a ramen bar and a dessert and ice cream spread (complete with a durian flavor for adventurous guests!) kept the celebration going well into the evening.

Reflecting on planning process, Xia admits the it was “a lot more time-consuming than expected,” but adds that their planner’s guidance made all the difference. Her advice to other couples? “Give yourselves enough time – it really helps reduce stress.”

Following their unforgettable wedding, the newlyweds traveled to the Maldives, Dubai, and Singapore for a dream honeymoon, marking the perfect beginning to their next chapter together.
