One of the main priorities for many couples planning their wedding is to make sure it is personal and reflects who they are as people. That’s why those who went to the same college or university often want to reflect their alma mater in their big day. Whether you were college sweethearts, met through mutual friends after graduation, or got together following an alumni event, there are plenty of ways to show your school spirit at your nuptials.

The most direct way to do this is to get married on campus, be it in an event space or an on-site chapel. Keep in mind that there can be specific rules on being able to get married or securing a date, particularly at religious colleges and universities, because the demand is often very high. Be sure to do your research!

If campus isn’t feasible or desirable as a location, there is always incorporating the school’s colors into your palette. However, don’t fret if that doesn’t match your aesthetic, there are still plenty of ways to bring your alma mater into the big day. We’ve featured real weddings that had the couple’s college mascot make an appearance at the reception, the marching band perform, and most common of all, a groom’s cake that represents the university. We’ve also seen the logos of the school incorporated into garters, suit lining, signage, and stationery. While you probably don’t want to make it your first dance, the fight song of your university can be great for your grand entrance as a married couple. It may not be specific to your college, but if you were in a sorority or fraternity, there may be traditions to take part in during a wedding as well.

Despite your love for your alma mater, you may not love the idea of embracing such a theme for your big day. There’s still a way to show a connection to the school you and your future spouse have in common: Engagement photos! Many college campuses are truly beautiful, so it’s a sentimental choice that won’t compromise your vision!
