For Abby Kucharczyk and Charlie Malhame, New York City has always been the constant. Raised just outside the city and now firmly rooted within it, their relationship unfolded against familiar streets and shared friendships that have shaped them since childhood. When it came time to marry, choosing New York as the setting felt less like a decision and more like a reflection of their lives – and their love story.
Charlie proposed on vacation in Jupiter, Florida, in a way that reflected Abby’s preference for simplicity. After suggesting a paddleboarding excursion, he dropped to one knee before they ever made it onto the water. “It was just the two of us with no one around, which is exactly what I wanted,” admits Abby. Charlie presented an emerald engagement ring set in yellow gold, a choice that reflected Abby’s love for distinctive, yet timeless design.
New York City was the obvious backdrop for their wedding celebration. Both born and raised just outside the city, Abby and Charlie had spent their adult lives there, and much of their relationship had unfolded within its neighborhoods. Surrounded by family and longtime friends, they planned a day that honored tradition while allowing the city’s iconic settings to take the lead.
The ceremony took place at church, where the architecture required little embellishment. “It was stunning all on its own,” describes the bride. Soft greenery was added to complement the space rather than transform it. Abby’s great uncle officiated – a meaningful continuation of family tradition, having also married her parents and siblings. Music was provided by the church cantor, with a special performance of “Ave Maria” sung by Abby’s brother-in-law during the presentation of the gifts. Their nieces, Charlie and Lucy, served as flower girls, bringing a lighthearted sweetness to the procession.
Prior to her grand entrance, the bride met her groom for a first look in Central Park. “A bird pooped on Charlie – but it’s supposed to be good luck!” smiles Abby as she recounts the moment. When it was time for Abby to walk down the aisle, she left onlookers in awe. She wore a gorgeous understated silk gown featuring a fitted bodice, sheer long sleeves, and a high neckline. She opted for a timeless chignon beneath her cathedral veil. The bride’s styling was intentionally restrained, reinforcing a sense of classic elegance without excess.
“For guests, more time to party and dance is always more enjoyable than more speeches.”
For the reception, the couple embraced the Art-Deco aesthetic of the venue, drawing inspiration from its purple and silver hues. Design elements throughout the room reflected this influence, from the linens and bridesmaid dresses to the mixed-metal flatware and metallic seating. White orchids cascaded from tall vases, paired with deep plum roses and calla lilies that echoed the room’s dramatic palette. Romantic candlelight flickered across mirrored surfaces and crystal glassware, creating an uncomplicated, yet refined atmosphere.
Abby and Charlie chose to walk around to each table in order to greet their guests – or met them on the dance floor – to ensure a personal moment with every attendee. Music played a central role in the celebration. The live entertainment’s sound leaned into an “Old-time New York” feel. “Our band absolutely crushed it all night,” affirms the groom. “For guests, more time to party and dance is always more enjoyable than more speeches.” As the night unfolded, guests were coaxed away only briefly – for dinner, dessert, and a late-night serving of McDonald’s – before returning to the celebration.
Following their wedding weekend, the newlyweds honeymooned across Hawaii, visiting Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. Thoughtfully planned and deeply personal, their New York City celebration reflected not only where their story began, but the enduring friendships and family ties that continue to shape it.
