Some love stories are sparked by chance encounters, while others are built quietly over time. For Heather O’Shea and Michael Kendall, theirs began in childhood. The two first met in second grade, sharing classrooms, school plays, and recess soccer games. “Even then, her smile was magnetic, and she brought a unique joy and happiness to everyone around her – a feeling that has never changed,” describes Michael.
Over the years, their paths again overlapped in high school, yet the romantic timing never quite aligned. It wasn’t until 20 years later, thanks to a nudge from a mutual family friend, that their long-standing connection resurfaced in a new way. By then, Heather and Michael were living full lives shaped by travel and demanding careers. Their relationship unfolded organically, rooted in familiarity and mutual respect rather than a singular defining moment. “Honestly, there wasn’t a huge aha! moment. It was more of a steady feeling that she was my person,” Michael admits.
When Michael began planning a proposal, he knew their upcoming travel to the château region of France would be the perfect setting. After exploring every floor of Château de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley, the proposal took place in the gardens once designed for Catherine de Medici – a joyful moment Heather recalls as a complete surprise, made all the more memorable by the reality of the day. “I was wearing tennis shoes and had not done my hair that day! We biked 20 miles the morning of, so needless to say, we were sweaty!” she smiles of her perfect proposal showcasing history, art, and a sparkling diamond ring.
With only a six-month engagement and demanding work schedules, the couple approached wedding planning with focus thanks to their trusted planner and the bride’s mother. Los Angeles was a natural choice: most of their guests were based in Southern California, and the city holds deep personal meaning from Heather and Michael’s time at USC and UCLA, respectively, during their college years. Historic architecture became the throughline of the day, beginning with St. John’s Cathedral – one of the city’s oldest – and then continuing to the storied Jonathan Club, celebrating its 100-year legacy.
The ceremony reflected heritage and intention. Rather than a traditional bridal party, Heather and Michael invited their nieces and nephews to take center stage – all wearing silk gold sashes and bow ties crafted by the groom’s mother – creating a procession rooted in family. Irish traditions were thoughtfully woven throughout, from blessings shared during the service to heirloom details that the bride carried. Heather wore her grandmother’s headpiece from the 1930s – previously worn by three generations – while her bouquet included meaningful charms representing loved ones past and present, including a gold shamrock.
Music played a defining role in the ceremony. The cathedral’s renowned organist and choir were joined by the Bob Gail four-string quartet, to blend classical selections with contemporary favorites. As the children processed to “Here Comes the Sun,” the atmosphere felt reverent yet joyful. The bride entered to Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March,” while a male vocalist performed “Ave Maria.” During a powerful moment, the congregation joined in song for Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” per the couple’s request.
“We wanted our first moments as a married couple to be spent personally welcoming every guest into the celebration.”
At the Jonathan Club, the celebration shifted seamlessly from ceremony to candlelit elegance. Cocktail hour on the Great Lawn Rooftop embraced an early-spring garden palette with lovely arrangements of vibrant florals and chartreuse linens. A mirror seating display interspersed with photographs from Heather and Michael’s lives guided attendees to their seats.
Inside the Grand Ballroom, dark wood paneling, frescoed ceilings, and expansive windows set the stage for timeless glamour. Linens in gold and crème, antique tables, warm lighting, and glass candelabras drew the eye upward, allowing the architecture to remain the focal point.
The reception was anchored by music and family tradition. A 13-piece band from Bob Gail Music & Entertainment filled the room with a carefully curated setlist, while Heather’s father joined them onstage to play the saxophone, which was an emotional highlight for many in attendance. Irish blessings were shared before dinner, a cousin dance honored a beloved late aunt, and heartfelt toasts celebrated family history and humor in equal measure.
The newlyweds took a modern approach to greeting guests to ensure meaningful moments with everyone before the night unfolded on the dance floor. “We wanted our first moments as a married couple to be spent personally welcoming every guest into the celebration,” describes Heather. It was a decision that reflected their priorities: connection and celebration.
After the wedding, the newlyweds traveled to Patagonia for their honeymoon, continuing a shared love of exploration. Thoughtfully planned yet deeply personal, their Los Angeles celebration honored where they came from and the life they are building together.
