Sometimes, wedding planners recommend thinking “outside the box” when it comes to gaining inspiration for your nuptials. In most cases, this refers to looking for ideas through unconventional channels pertaining to what makes you and your beloved unique. However, from time to time, this phrase might also pertain to looking beyond your geographical location. Drawing from weddings abroad is gaining popularity, as so many brides and grooms relish travel as a fundamental aspect of their relationship.

While many American couples think of sandy beaches and tropical climates when a “destination wedding” comes to mind, marriage celebrations are happening all over the world. Below, we’ve collected photos from three different ceremonies conducted in Europe – all of which exemplify a distinct air of understated elegance. Each pair, most as Europeans themselves, designed their special days with an intricate attention to detail with lovely nods to their culture and their surroundings. Scroll through the weddings to get ideas for your own event, and be sure to click on the pictures for more from each fête!

Iana & Joseph's Wedding in Ukraine
Long-distance couple Iana and Joseph decided to finally tie the knot over breakfast at a quaint local café in the bride’s hometown of Lviv in Ukraine. They officially exchanged vows in a religious ceremony in one of the oldest churches in Kyiv, but held a second ceremony later that night at a restaurant venue. The pair included many bright colors and cascading florals in their tablescapes, as well as chic vintage elements throughout their reception. Photos by Julia Elinecka Photography

Kimberley & Chris' Nuptials in England
Crafty English bride Kimberely was quite excited to completely design her own wedding to fiancé Chris. “I wanted to make almost everything myself – I found Pinterest to be a godsend!” Gorgeous and fragrant wildflowers were utilized throughout both the ceremony and reception, making appearances in the bouquets, down the aisle, in watering cans on tables, and even woven into the hair of the bride, bridesmaids, and flower girl. Photos by Andie Freeman Photography

Albania & Vladimir's Elopement in Crimea
Meeting on a work trip, Albania and Vladimir became engaged at a lively rock concert. After considering their wedding options, the duo elected to elope and planned a “wedding day just for two,” tells the bride. Albania wore a stunning, flowing blue gown and the lovebirds snapped photos of their minimalistic details atop a cliff in Crimea – the sweeping views and powerful ocean were the perfect setting for their intimate event. Photos by Alexander and Marina Santi
